I sent a letter last month to Mary and Jay Jenkins, and it was returned to me (just recently) because, as it said on the envelope, they're not there.
Is that really the case?
If so, why did they leave? Was there a lot of ill feelings with it, or was it more of a benign thing, time to move on?

Also, is Joyce still at Putney?

Have a great day, y'all.

4:44 pm - Nico Poore and President Bush

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Found this article on Nicholas Poore (class of 2005) and decided to share!

Here's a short excerpt:

'The president spent some time with Niko Poore, a volunteer from Putney, Vt., who gave him an onion from his crop.

"I don't think I'll eat it now," Bush said, wiping the dirt away.

Poore said his life has been surreal since he hitchhiked here from Vermont.

"It's amazing I could be some redneck hitchhiking and coming down here and cutting trees and now I am meeting the president," Poore said with a grin.'

10:36 am - Marshmellows

Just wanted to share another putney memory:
When they mow down the fields, they bale up all the grass into huge white cube looking things. They are like 5 feet tall, and they just stack these things up into huge piles. I remember we used to call them the Marshmellows. We used to hike out to lower farm, or even the field out by StoneHut, and climb up these things. We'd have wrestling competitions, where we'd try to throw eachother off the Marshmellows (which was really dangerous in retrospect). The way they were stacked also created lots of cracks and caves, which we'd crawl down into for cover and engage in nefarious acts. Good times.

12:18 pm - hey

*peeks around* this place looks empty--- but I have a few questions...
I just applied, and got accepted to Putney!! *YAY* And I cant wait to go this next fall. I'll be entering as a Junior....

I was wondering if people had favorite memories, pieces of advice, or any such thing to offer.

I was also wondering what your stance on the lack of grades at Putney was... and how is it entering college with out those grades....

Hope you are all doing well! I cant wait to be at Putney next year...

1:23 pm - Town Meetings

From the book Sixties Legacy:

Carl Rogers, the originator of client-centered therapy and a leading theorist in humanistic psychology, was a major advocate of the encounter-group experience...
Rogers's ideas about schooling included encounter-group experiences for teachers, administrators, parents, and students, and combinations of these groups. The encounter group philosohpy was reflected in "town-meetings" conducted by many early alternative schools, wherein the entire school community met to exchange thoughts and opinions on school policies, conditions of school life, and other matters.
Many teachers in these schools also adopted encounter-group methods in open, honest classroom discussions about course goals and activities, and in meetings with student groups in their dual capacity as counselors, an extension of the teaching role common in alternative schools.

That paragraph just sort of jumped out of the page at me...
Putney more-or-less does that. huh.

Anyway...interesting. Yeah.

8:50 pm - O.o

There's a Putney Community? This is scary...OMG I haven't see all of you for a long time...that's weird...Oh, well, most of you, none of you newies or summer people. I'm a Grad by the way, class of 2003. And Kailah...I think that's Kailah, about slavery at putney, I'm going to guess that project is over, but you can say that students are forced to work and study and are sold out to the school by their parents whether they like it or not and not see a penny for the work that they do... or maybe I'm stretching that a little ^-^; Aaaaany way. Oh this is Sara by the way Sara with a C-O-L-B-Y as a last name, the half Japanese girl that is fluent in ze language. w00t! Least I don't have to teach it anymore mwahahahahahah!

Weirdly stumbled upon this community with a wild shot wondering who had thier interest listed as Putney! And look what I find! A Whole LiveJournal dedicated to the Putney School!!!!! Awesome. lol.

So, I'm Mao, and I attended first session of the summer program last year (summer of 2003).
And it was...amazing. So obviously, I've applied again for this summer. Yay.

Nice to meet the handful of you! :)
